St. Ives Bay Swimming Club anti bullying policy

We are committed to providing a caring and friendly environment for all of our members so they swim in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at our club. If bullying does occur, all swimmers or parents should be able to tell and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. We are a TELLING club. This means that anyone who knows that bullying is happening is expected to tell the club welfare officer or any committee member.

What is bullying?
Bullying is the use of aggression with the intention of hurting another person. Bullying results in pain and distress to the victim.

Bullying can be:-
• Emotional – being unfriendly; excluding (emotionally and physically); sending hurtful text messages; tormenting (e.g. hiding equipment or belongings); threatening gestures.
• Physical – pushing; hitting; punching or use of any violence
• Racist – racial taunts; graffiti; gestures
• Sexual – unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments
• Homophobic – because of, or focusing on the issues of sexuality
• Verbal – name-calling; sarcasm; spreading rumours; teasing

Procedures:
1. Report bullying incidents to club welfare officer Louise Ninnes 01736 794642 or 07866 992043 or to a committee member or ring Swimline on 0808 100 4001
2. Parents should be informed and will be asked to come in to a meeting to discuss the problem.
3. If necessary and appropriate police will be consulted.
4. The bullying behaviour or threats of bullying must be investigated and the bullying stopped immediately
5. An attempt will be made to help the bully (bullies) to change their behaviour.
6. If mediation fails and the bullying is seen to continue the club will initiate disciplinary action under the club constitution.

St. Ives Bay Swimming Club coaches code of conduct

All St Ives Bay Swimming Club coaches/volunteers will:

• Put the wellbeing, health and safety of members above all considerations including developing performance.
• Comply with codes, rules and laws within the guidelines of the ASA.
• Work without discrimination on the grounds of race, colour, gender, language religion, birth or social status as set out in the Equal Opportunities Policy.
• Respect the basic human rights, worth and dignity of each member.
• Not encourage swimmers, volunteers, officials or parents to violate the rules of the club or the sport.
• Encourage all swimmers to obey the rules both in and out of the pool.
• Ensure all teaching, training and competition programmes are appropriate for the age, ability and experience of the individual swimmer.
• Treat other competitors and teams with respect in victory and defeat.
• Be able to present evidence of qualifications on request.
• Treat all personal information about members as confidential expect in exceptional circumstances regarding health and safety, medical requirements, disciplinary action or in accordance with ASA Child Protection procedures and guidelines.
• Be a positive role model at all times.
• Do not drink alcohol, smoke tobacco or use narcotics either before or during teaching or coaching sessions/competitions.

St. Ives Bay Swimming Club parents code of conduct

At training sessions:

• Ensure that the children have the correct equipment (including adequate water) for the session.
• Keep in touch with the club’s activities by regularly checking the notice board and newsletters and if appropriate by joining the club’s email list.
• Direct any coaching queries to club officials or coaches when they are not involved in the training sessions.
• Where queries are not resolved request issue to be raised at the next committee meeting.
• Promote a responsible and disciplined attitude to child protection issues by viewing training sessions from the public gallery not poolside.
• St Ives Bay Swimming Club is only responsible for the safety and welfare of the children whilst they are attending their particular training session. The parent/carer is responsible for the safety of the child prior to the session starting and for the safe collection of their child at the end of the training session.

At all galas:

• Ensure swimmers arrive at venues at the correct time.
• Remain in the spectator area unless requested to assist.
• Encourage swimmer to stay with the team group.

Bad Behaviour

St Ives Bay Swimming Club expects good behaviour from all its members at all times while participating in club activities. The coaches have the authority to ask any swimmer to leave the pool/session if they are not adhering to the Code of Conduct or behaving in an appropriate manner. Parents will be informed if this occurs.
Persistent offenders may, at the committee’s discretion, face a suspension or expulsion from the club.

St. Ives Bay Swimming Club members code of conduct

The purpose of this document is to establish a set of guidelines and procedures that outline the responsibilities of both staff and swimmers who are members of St Ives Bay Swimming Club. These principles should be followed at all events and training sessions.

Behaviour and personal conduct must at all times be of a high standard and reflect favourably on the sport and on the club. Language in public or relevant group situations must always be appropriate and socially acceptable.

Consumption of alcohol is totally forbidden for athletes under age as defined by UK law. It must not be consumed by swimmers or staff members whilst en route, prior to, during or following a competition event, training sessions or team activities.

Smoking is prohibited by swimmers and staff whilst en route, prior to, during or following a competition event, training sessions or team activities.

Personal appearance shall be appropriate to circumstances and as indicated by the Team Manager. Team kit and equipment shall be worn as directed by the Team manager when competing and training, when assembling or travelling, at official team functions or on other occasions as notified.

Attendance at all activities is expected unless agreed by the Team manager. Throughout the duration of the trip swimmers shall inform staff members of their whereabouts. Punctuality on all occasions is essential and any curfew should be observed.

Illegal and performance enhancing drugs are strictly forbidden. Swimmers are expected to be aware of the current list of banned substances and particular care must be exercised if anyone is on medication prior to or during a meet. The use of illegal drugs and substances, even though they may not appear on the official banned list in respect of performance enhancing drugs, is nonetheless prohibited.

Accommodation at hotels or the equivalent must be as directed by the club staff and at no times must anyone extra be accommodated in swimmers’ rooms.

Swimmers Log Book

This is a valuable aid to training and motivation, with important information included and space for targets, evaluation of swim sessions and space to record times and skills
achieved. Lee would like all swimmers to have one, and we plan to check these
regularly as part of the swimmers’ development.
