Cornwall Swimming Championships 2012

Not content with grabbing a superb haul of 94 medals at the recently held Cornwall County Championships, individuals from St.Ives Bay Swimming Club also excelled by breaking previous Championship Best Times (CBT’s) in twelve separate events. Among a strong showing from all who represented the club at the ‘Counties,’ hosted over consecutive weekends by the Penzance and Bodmin clubs, special mention must go to young Zachary Broomfield, who wrote himself into the record books with six new CBT’s. Josh Bond also succeeded in setting a brand new Senior County Record for the 200m butterfly, effectively ‘book-ending’ this feat with the Junior County Record he set a couple of years ago. He also has the added satisfaction of knowing his time replaces one of the longest standing of all County records, which up until this year had remained unrivalled since 1988.

Popularly serving a dual purpose as opportunity for Cornish talent to gain eligibility for the forthcoming regional championships being staged in June, St.Ives Bay coaching staff were thrilled to see eight of its squad members achieve personal qualification times. This is a real boost and more than doubles the qualifying number from the past two seasons.

Adding interest to the competitiveness of the County Championships, awards are also made to the eight swimmers gaining the highest total of points within their respective age category. These Age Group Category Awards, or BAGCATs as they are known, are included in the results summaries below.

BAGCAT presentations were made poolside at the close of the gala with many proud St.Ives prize winners looking every inch the part in their smart club tee shirts donated especially for the event by club sponsor, the Carbis Bay Hotel.

In so far as club standings were concerned, St.Ives were placed overall 3rd at this year’s championships.

CBT = Championship Best Time

County Inter Club victory for St.Ives Bay Swim Club

A fabulous team performance secured victory for St.Ives Bay Swim Club in the Cornwall Junior Inter Club Shield held on 15th January at Bodmin Dragon Leisure Centre. Contested by teams aged under 13, this annual duel in the pool pitches the cream of the county’s swimming clubs together in a battle for the title of Division One champions.

Travelling supporters were treated to some fabulous racing during the evening with the action spread out over a total of 48 races. Events comprised a mixture of individual and sprint relays, clubs accumulating points dependent upon finishing places – six points for first, all the way down to one point for sixth and last place. Competing Clubs were allocated the same lane draw for the whole competition and as points totted up early on it became evident the contest would be settled by a three way tussle featuring St.Ives Bay in lane 1, Penzance in lane 4 and Truro City in lane 5. By the end of the first quarter, it was Truro who occupied top spot but the St.Ives team’s speed and skills across the four strokes enabled them to gain the lead by the mid way mark, followed closely by Penzance in second place.

Roared on by a proud bunch of mums and dads, St.Ives Bay looked in no mood to relinquish their grip on the lead, once gained, and succeeded in cementing their position by adding significantly to their points tally in the second half of the programme. When the final standings were announced they found themselves 19 points clear of their nearest challengers, Penzance, before lifting the Shield and showing it off on a well deserved victory lap of honour around the pool.

Congratulations go to all squad members who participated, particularly those younger swimmers taking to the starting blocks, at this level of competition, for the first time.
